Why this matters
If your team works from home, a coffee shop, or a client site, your devices become part of your network. A single outdated laptop or a weak home Wi‑Fi connection can open the door to ransomware, data theft, or downtime. This guide covers the essentials: keeping devices current, choosing safe networks, and knowing when to call an MSP.
Keep devices current
Operating systems and applications receive security patches regularly. Unpatched software is the most common entry point for attackers.
- Windows: Enable Windows Update and set updates to install automatically on weekends or nights. Review the update history monthly to confirm no errors.
- macOS: System Settings → Software Update. Enable automatic checks and install immediately when available.
- Mobile devices: iOS and Android receive security updates through the App Store and Play Store. Set automatic updates for both OS and apps.
- Servers and printers: These are often overlooked. Keep firmware and OS versions current. If a device is end-of-life, replace it.
Home versus work Wi‑Fi
Your home network is not the same as your business network.
- Use a separate SSID for personal devices. Keep your work devices on a dedicated network that does not share the same LAN as guest devices or IoT products.
- Change default router credentials and disable WPS. Use WPA3 or WPA2‑AES with a strong passphrase.
- Limit guest Wi‑Fi to internet access only. Do not allow guest devices to reach your work devices or internal servers.
- Avoid public Wi‑Fi for sensitive work. If you must connect on a café or airport network, use a reputable VPN and avoid accessing internal systems or email.
When to involve an MSP
You should contact an MSP when:
- You cannot keep up with patching across multiple devices.
- You need a centralized policy for password requirements, encryption, and device join.
- You require backup verification, threat detection, or incident response.
- You need help selecting hardware that meets your security requirements.
